How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Your Room

Posted by Santa Barbara on

Choosing the right rug size can completely change the way a room feels. A rug should help anchor the furniture, define the space, and bring warmth, texture, and balance into the home. At Rugs & More in Santa Barbara, we help clients choose handmade rugs for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, entries, hallways, and larger design projects throughout Santa Barbara, Montecito, and the Central Coast.

For living rooms, the most common rug sizes are 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, and larger. In many rooms, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug to create a connected seating area. For larger rooms or open-concept spaces, a larger rug can allow all furniture legs to sit comfortably on the rug, creating a more finished and grounded design.

For dining rooms, the rug should be large enough for the table and chairs. A good rule is to choose a rug that extends beyond the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. Larger dining rooms often need 9x12, 10x14, or oversized rugs, depending on the size of the table and the room.

For bedrooms, rugs can be placed under the bed with space extending on both sides, or smaller rugs can be used beside the bed for softness and comfort. Medium rugs such as 5x8, 6x9, and 8x10 can work well in bedrooms, while larger bedrooms may need 9x12 or bigger.

Small rugs are perfect for entries, bedside areas, kitchens, bathrooms, layered spaces, and accent areas. Runner rugs are ideal for hallways, kitchens, stairways, and narrow spaces where a standard rectangular rug may not fit. Square and round rugs work beautifully in foyers, breakfast rooms, sitting areas, offices, and spaces that need a softer or more balanced shape.

At Rugs & More, our collection includes small rugs, medium rugs, large rugs, oversized rugs, runner rugs, square rugs, round rugs, antique rugs, Persian rugs, Oushak rugs, modern rugs, wool rugs, and silk rugs.
