Mogul emperors were deeply inspired by Persian art and culture, especially Persian carpets, in what is called “The Golden Age of Persian Weaving.” In 1584, Akbar the Great established his capital at Agra, where his grandson, in Shah Jahan, was to build the Taj Mahal. In Persia, Kashan was a center of silk production and, as the largest city in the northwest, a major stop on every trade route. Kashan’s weaving produced some of the most desirable and best classical Persian rugs. This is a great example of an all-over design. Kashan rugs come from the historical city in Iran. The original Kashan dates back to the 17thCentury in royal workshops. Kashan rugs are usually made of tightly woven cotton and often show bright colors dyed by vegetable dyes.
