“Jaf” refers to a tribe who speak the Jaf dialect of Jaffi, and are the largest Kurdish tribe in the Middle East. Jaf Kurdish rugs feature an intricate diamond lattice pattern, as seen on this Unique Rare Jaf Kurd Rug Circa 1860s. This particular type of rug is highly sought after because the quality of the older weaving is very high, and has only declined with time, making the old rugs very rare. The late 19thC carpets had techniques that are tribal influenced. The town of Oushak is found by the Gediz river. It is known that Oushak carpets were the first to reach Europe and have since then set an standard for taste and design. For Centuries, these carpets have been featured in commissioned paintings and Sultans, Viziers and Pashas employed weavers to make Oushacks, typically of a grand scale for their homes.
