Mohtasham is one of the most revered weavers of Kashan. His rugs are some of the highest quality Persian weavings. The town of Kashan located in central Iran between Isfahan and Tehran is often referred to as the greatest weaving center in western Persia. Mohtasham Kashans ranges from 200 to 300 knots per square inch, with the older ones tending towards the upper end of the scale. An interesting thing about Mohtasham Kashans is that the oldest examples tend to have the highest knot counts but a certain crudeness of design.

Farahan Rugs – Antique Farahan rugs and carpets that were produced in the Arak region of west central Iran, are remarkable for their ability to combine different qualities and sensibilities. The medallion design customary on so-called Sarouk-Farahans is classically Persian, as is all the minor detail. But the drawing is an interesting combination of suave curve-linearity and geometric styles.

In Persia, Kashan was a center of silk production and, as the largest city in the northwest, a major stop on every trade route. Kashan’s weaving produced some of the most desirable and best classical Persian rugs. This is a great example of an all-over design. Kashan rugs come from the historical city in Iran. The original Kashan dates back to the 17thCentury in royal workshops. Kashan rugs are usually made of tightly woven cotton and often show bright colors dyed by vegetable dyes.
