Mamluk carpets are characterized by a central, dominant octagonal medallion surrounded by a great variety of smaller, geometric motifs. They take their name from the Mamluk dynasties that ruled Egypt from 1250 through 1517. Carpets of this design were produced in Cairo, largely for the southern European luxury trade.

A Mamluk carpet exquisitely crafted using organically dyed hand spun wool. Mamluk carpets use a simple color palette consistent of blue, red, yellow and green. One of the most significant clues we have to Mamluk designs is their representation in Venetian paintings where they began to appear in the 16th century. They are characterized by a central medallion which is surrounded by smaller motifs. The smaller motifs are geometric, amking the carpet appear as a kaleidosscope. One of the finest examples of surviving Mamluk rugs is in the Berdini textile museum in Italy.

17th Century Silk Polonaise Rug – “Rugs rich with silk and gold” were reworked upon by western 17th Century visitors to the Esfahan bazaar, and this piece is exactly what they marveled at. The name “polonaise” (polish) is a misnomer, a 19th century mistaken attribution based on a number appearing from Polish noble collections.

Haji Jalili Tabriz Rugs – At the end of the 19th century, after a prolonged period of dormancy, the Persian town of Tabriz experienced an artistic revival and successfully reasserted itself into the forefront of the rug-making world. Perhaps one of the most important figures in this reawakening of Tabriz as an important rug-making center was the master weaver Haji Jalili, from the nearby of Marand.
