Carpet weaving was one of the most outstanding aspects of textile production in India under the Mughal dynasty from the late sixteenth to early eighteenth centuries. The distinctive and beautifully drawn botanical motifs are not the only elements behind the stylistic richness of Mughal carpets. The empire’s expert dyers contributed to the vibrant, colorful style of these early rugs. Carpet weaving was one of the most outstanding aspects of textile production in India under the Mughal dynasty from the late sixteenth to early eighteenth centuries.

Named for the famous 19th century master weaver, our Haj Jalili Collection of Tabriz style area rugs is an homage to the richly detailed carpets of this renowned rug maker. Haji Jalili was known worldwide for his talent of creating decadent designs and corresponding color combinations which are in high demand with high end interior designers today. These amazing Tabriz Rugs resurfaced after the 19thCentury. The revival of these carpets proved to be wildly successful. Haji Jalili used distinctive color palettes and designs. He is especially known for mixing lighter colors such as bronze, blues rose and soft ivory. At Santa Barbara Design Center, we have collected a large selection of antique Haj Jalili Tabriz rugs.

Mamluk carpets are characterized by a central, dominant octagonal medallion surrounded by a great variety of smaller, geometric motifs. They take their name from the Mamluk dynasties that ruled Egypt from 1250 through 1517. Carpets of this design were produced in Cairo, largely for the southern European luxury trade.

This Mamluk rug is a wonderful representation of a classic 16th century design. The Mamluk Dynasty of Egypt commissioned these rugs to have classical Islamic geometric ornamentation, and many were patterned after the highly detailed tiles produced around that period of time.
