This Antique Malayer rug was woven in a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia. In the 19th and 20th century, the rugs produced here were typically small. One of this caliber was hard to come by. In Mayler oversize antique carpets are seen very rarely and were woven on commission; making this antique an rare treasure indeed.

Rare Antique Bijar is Connoisseur-Caliber and is made of natural dyes, and fine wool. The small town of Bijar produces carpets that are known worldwide for their superb craft and fine materials. This small town and it’s surrounding villages are populated by Kurdish people who are known for their great craft and artistic ability. These grand carpets were often commissioned by Persian aristocrats and nobles. One distinguishing feature of these carpets are their heavy wool foundation. The weavers pound down the knots which create a carpet that can withstand up to 200 years of heavy use. This particular carpet has the classic Bijar motif and benefits from the same indestructible Kurdish weave with a light all-over palmette and lotus flower field. Mogul emperors were deeply inspired by Persian art and culture, especially Persian carpets, in what is called “The Golden Age of Persian Weaving.” In 1584, Akbar the Great established his capital at Agra, where his grandson, in Shah Jahan, was to build the Taj Mahal.
