Antique Rugs
In the 1650’s-1685 the Savonneriere rugs were gaining popularity and esteem around Europe. These lovely designs are made of silk and specialize in small details. The Ghiordes knot is used and is modeled after many Persian models. Soon French pectoral and armorial designs were most promident in these lovely carpets.

Savonnerie rugs along with Aubusson rugs have purely French designs with the occasional addition of Rococo elements. They are knotted like an oriental rug, on a cotton foundation. The pile is mostly wool, with occasional silk highlights.

This Antique French Aubusson is a wonderful way to incorporate history and art into your home. In the 17th century French Rug designers developed the art of weaving rugs with depth perspective. This technique is very difficult and is one of a kind that is not found elsewhere. Today, the only rugs found with three dimensional patterns are Aubusson, Savonnerie and Needlepoints

A fantastic piece of history, Antique Aubusson Rugs originated in the Central France town of Aubusson. Commissioned for the nobility and royal residences of France, the rugs are oversized and incorporate Renaissance imagery. This is a beautiful example of the style, including a classical floral motif and a wonderful color palette to match the fashions of the day.
